International Weavers Festival 2016

International Weavers Festival, 2016 will be the first of its kind ever organized in the world to celebrate, showcase and promote the distinguished weaving arts of the different regions of the country. Along with that, the Festival would showcase the weaving heritage of the different countries like India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and others. Through combining a couple of distinct initiatives and cultural events, this Three (3) Days Festival aims at manifesting the flagship craftsmanship and traditional weaving arts of Bangladesh, the latent entrepreneurial spirit of the grassroots women weavers.

Reviving & Internationalization of Handloom Industry

The Handloom Industry, the oldest and largest cottage-based industry, was the biggest in Bangladesh but is unfortunately struggling, with traditional artists switching profession. Their specialty and capacity are therefore being unused over the years, sadly this rich culture might disappear soon if we do not come forward and give a helping hand.

But ironically, in Bangladesh, there is no significant platform formed yet to showcase and zoom in on the struggles, resourcefulness, talent and prospects of the weaving people and weaving related people.

Our aim is to throw the spotlight on the weaving tradition of different parts of the country and bring it to the centre stage so that it, once again, finds a pride of place in contemporary Bangladesh and gets recognition on the global platform as well.

Empowerment of the Handloom Women

Women contribute substantially to the prosperity of Handloom industry. Despite such contributory features, which are outwardly unique, female weavers were never given the primacy they require. That is why the core philosophy of this festival is Empowering Women. Through this initiative we will try to empower women craftsmen, assistance and others as much recognition as possible including required training &foreign exposures.

We know women’s economic empowerment is one of the imperative routes towards sustainable development and pro-people growth. There is no doubt that handloom related women and girls are still hit hardest by poverty and discrimination. We want to provide them a one-stop permanent platform for facilitating professional development, start-up supports, and market access. For this, there is a future plan in pipeline to establish a women empowerment foundation for the lady weavers to examine the sustaining obstacles that prevent them from achieving their full potential.

Celebrating 2016 Tourism Year of Bangladesh

With the possible patronization of Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Bangladesh information booths will be made available for visitors to learn more about the weaver villages and the historical sites around the related areas. Information to visit these places will be given out through a variety of means, such as inflight magazines on international and local flights; through the proposed documentary; website; pictorial book; and through leaflets given before and during the festival.
